FAVORITE FARMERS MARKET

Alemany Farmers Market
WHERE: 100 Alemany, at Bayshore Boulevard
WHEN: Saturday mornings
WHAT: Buy your produce like a San Franciscan
INFO: www.sfgov.org/site/alemany

Let the tourists have the Ferry Building — Alemany is where real San Franciscans select their produce!

FAVORITE PLACE TO BUY INGREDIENTS FOR A HOME-COOKED MEAL
Bi-Rite Market
WHERE: 3639 18th St., between Guerrero and Dolores streets
WHAT: Helpful, friendly middleman
INFO: (415) 241-9760 or www.biritemarket.com

It’s similar to going to a farmers market, but with a really helpful, friendly middleman that gives a discount for working there.

FAVORITE PLACE TO HAVE A MEAN COCKTAIL
Blackbird
WHERE: 2124 Market St., between Church and Sanchez streets
WHAT: Stunning collection of liquors
INFO: www.blackbirdbar.com

Their collection of liquors is absolutely quenching. I suggest the “Remember the Maine.”

FAVORITE PLACE TO BIKE
Up and down Valencia Street
WHERE: From 14th Street to Cesar Chavez
WHAT: Great way to explore the Mission

This corridor provides easy passage to, from, and through the Mission while lining itself with great shops — plus, the recent renovation makes travel much friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians!

FAVORITE PLACE TO RUN
Lands End
WHERE: El Camino del Mar and 32nd Ave
WHAT: Excellent Bay views and trails

When the fog subsides, Lands End provides stunning views of the Bay along its rugged trails.

FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP FOR CLOTHES
MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing)
WHERE: 387 Grove St., between Franklin and Gough streets
WHAT: Progressive designers and local artisans
INFO: (415) 863-3011

A wonderfully curated store that carries both internationally known, progressive designers and local artisans. Ben and Chris (and their mother, too!) are very friendly people.

FAVORITE CAFE
Stable Café
WHERE: 2128 Folsom St., between 17th and 18th streets
WHAT: Seasonable menu, restored façade
INFO: (415) 552-1199 or www.stablecafe.com

I can’t help but love a cafe that provides a local, seasonable menu in addition to its beautifully restored façade, so Stable Café on Folsom receives my vote.

FAVORITE PLACE TO BRING OUT-OF-TOWNERS
Dolores Park
WHERE: Between 18th, 20th, Church and Dolores streets
WHAT: Great place to enjoy food, wine and a view
INFO: www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolores_Park

After a long day of urban hiking through our hills, visitors deserve a place with a nice view, good food and a glass of wine — the park (and the surrounding businesses) can provide it all!

FAVORITE SF GARDEN TO VOLUNTEER IN
SF General Hospital’s gardens
WHERE: 1001 Potrero Ave., at 23rd St., third-floor patio
WHAT: New program will provide free farmers market to patients
INFO: www.sfghheartbeets.blogspot.com

A new program, Heartbeets, is in the works to provide a free farmers market to patients at the hospital. This is my summer internship, and I am excited to help it grow!
