Muni yard may be renamed after late SFMTA board member

The Geneva yard, which houses the historic streetcars favored by Cameron Beach, could be renamed in honor of the former Muni board member who passed away unexpectedly last month.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency board of directors will vote to rename the yard, located near the Balboa Park transit station, after Beach, who served four years on the department’s seven-person governing body.

Beach, a longtime transit advocate known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the Muni system, was a particular champion for the restoral of the agency’s historic streetcar fleet. In a resolution authored by the SFMTA, the agency is recommending renaming the yard due to Beach’s “ardent support of these vehicles.”

Last week, Mayor Ed Lee appointed Joel Ramos to replace Beach on the SFMTA board.
