Muni fare gate overhaul heads to new station

Muni’s ongoing work to replace its downtown Metro fare gates will continue next week, with construction slated to take place at the Powell Street Station.

Starting on Monday, the fare gates at the east end of the Powell Street Station we’ll be out of use while crews work to upgrade the equipment. The construction will last until Friday. For that duration, cash-paying customers must use the fare gates on the opposite end of Powell Street Station.

The eight-month long construction project is part of Muni’s transition from its existing fare system to full implementation of the TransLink card, a one-stop media fare that will one day be available on all 28 Bay Area transit systems. This summer the TransLink card will be rebranded as the Clipper card.
