Muni driver in bus accident fairly new to the job

The Muni operator involved in a bizarre accident Sunday involving a blown fire hydrant and an injured wheelchair-bound rider has been employed by the transit agency for less than a year.

The incident occurred on a 22-Fillmore bus, where a passenger in a wheelchair fell while attempting to exit using the vehicle’s wheelchair lift. About 20 minutes later, while the lift was still extended, the bus moved slightly and sheered off a portion of a fire hydrant, which sent water gushing 30 feet into the air.

The operator of the bus was hired in March and has been placed on nondriving status. The agency is investigating how the bus rolled forward while the wheelchair lift was still extended.
