Muni could begin fare transition to TransLink today

Muni’s official transition to TransLink could start today.

The Municipal Transportation Agency’s Board of Directors will decide at its meeting today whether the agency’s payment process should begin a gradual, and eventually full, transition from their paper Fast Pass fares to the sturdier TransLink card — the Bay Area’s one-stop system that will one day be available on all regional transit vehicles.

To help ease the transition process, the MTA, which operates Muni, is giving away free TransLink cards to all of the agency’s Fast Pass card holders. The agency usually charges a $5 fee for the cards.

Those who snatch up the cards now could actually be seizing upon a collector's item — by this summer, TransLink is expected to rebranded under a new moniker — the Clipper card.
