Mountain lion seen in back yard in Portola Valley

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Friday night mountain lion sighting in Portola Valley.

Deputies said residents in the 500 block of Crest Vista Lane called the sheriff's office Saturday morning after they saw a mountain lion in their backyard around 11:15 p.m.

There have been several mountain lion sightings in the Bay Area in recent weeks.

A 65-pound male mountain lion was killed Wednesday in Santa Clara County following a Sept. 7 attack on a 6-year-old boy who was hiking with his family.

Officials said most mountain lions will usually try to avoid confrontation with people, but people should not approach one if they see it.

Hikers and joggers are advised to avoid those activities at dawn, dusk and at night in areas where mountain lions are known to roam.

Officials said people who encounter a mountain lion should not run but should face the animal, make noise, try to appear bigger by waving their arms, and throw objects.
