Mountain lion report thought to be a false alarm

A report that a pair of mountain lions were seen entering the western side of Edgewood Park in San Mateo County at 1:30 p.m. Thursday is believed by San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department to have been a false alarm.

Sheriff’s deputies headed to the park, which is west of Redwood City, to investigate the reporting and found no signs of any mountain lions, according to department spokesman Ray Lunny.

The caller who reported the lions said they had seen a mauled deer but no mountain lion tracks or dead deer were found, according to Lunny. After the call was received, the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services issued a warning to residents.

Instead, the deputies found deer grazing, according to Lunny.  “When there’s a mountain lion in the area like that, you won’t find deer grazing,” Lunny said.
