Mother of infant slain in shooting weeps at first sight of alleged killer

The mourning mother of a 3-month-old boy shot dead in East Palo Alto wept at just the sight of the accused killer Wednesday in a Redwood City courtoom, where the suspect was assigned an attorney.

While leaving a baby shower last week, Ivonne Garcia Lopez was shot along with her husband as 15 bullets were sprayed into her car. Lopez told reporters she was optimistic that justice would be served in the killing of her infant Izack Jimenez Garcia.

Accused shooter 17-year-old Fabien Zaragoza, dressed in a yellow jail uniform, his long black hair tied neatly into a ponytail, was expressionless during Wednesday's plea hearing at Redwood City Felony Court. He was assigned defense attorney Peter Goldscheider, who declined to comment on the case.

A judge allowed Zaragoza to delay his plea until July 13 so that Goldscheider could review the case. He said outside the courtroom that all he knows about the incident is what he has read in the newspapers.

The families of both the suspect and the victim attended Wednesday's court proceedings.
