Morning stock check: VMWare up, Altera down 

In early trading this morning, VMWare, Inc. (VMW), a Palo Alto-based information technology solutions company, is up more than 2 percent per share. Intuitive Surgical, Inc. (ISRG) is also doing well early this morning and has started out strong the past several days.

Altera Corp. (ALTR), a San Jose company manufacturing technology devices, is taking a hit this morning with its shares down more than 15 percent in early trading. Also, Sunnyvale's Juniper Networks, Inc. (JNPR), a network solutions company, is down more than 8 percent, and NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA) is down around 5 percent per share.

The companies trading at the highest volume this morning are Intel Corp. (INTC) with 19.32 million shares changing hands, BEA Systems, Inc. (BEAS) at 11.99 million and Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) at 10.55 million.

Overall, the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index is trending down so far this morning.

In other stock-related news, Altera's shares are dropping after revenue forecasts missed estimates, according to Bloomberg News. Existing home sales in the U.S. also fell by 8 percent, according to the Wall Street Journal.
