Morning stock check: Sun Microsystems up, VMware down 

In early trading this morning, Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA) is up more than 1 percent per share, the largest gains today. Flextronics International Ltd. (FLEX) and BEA Systems, Inc. (BEAS) are also posting small gains this morning.

Local companies trending down this morning include VMware, Inc. (VMW) and SunPower Corp. (SPWR), which are both down more than 3 percent per share. The company doing the worst in early trading is Yahoo! Inc. (YHOO), which is down about 5 percent. This comes just a day after the House Foreign Affairs Committee blasted executives for Yahoo's role in helping China jail a journalist in 2004.

Twenty-nine million shares of Sun Microsystems have changed hands this morning, while Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO) is trading at a volume of 25.39 million.

Overall, the Dow Jones Industrial Average Index is trending down more than 100 points in early trading.

In other stock news, Cisco Systems is profiting from sales in Serbia, according to Bloomberg News. Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS), out of Redwood Shores, will close a Chicago unit, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
