Morning stock check: Apple, Franklin up 

Local computer industry trend setter Apple, Inc. (AAPL) is trading up this morning with stocks up more than 6 percent in early trading. Franklin Resources, Inc. (BEN), a San Mateo-based investment management company, is also up around 4 percent this morning.

Local companies down in early trading today are BEA Systems, Inc. (BEAS), National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM), a Santa Clara semiconductor manufacturer, Lam Research Corp. (LRCX), and KLA-Tencor Corp. (KLAC).

The companies leading the way this morning in volume of trading are BEA Systems with more than 40 million shares changing hands and Apple with traders exchanging more than 28 million shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index as a whole is up in early trading this morning.

On other stock-related news, Apple announced strong fourth-quarter results with Mac sales setting a record, according to a news release. Oracle Corp. (ORCL) has set a deadline of Oct. 28 for BEA Systems to accept its purchase offer, according to Reuters.
