Montessori program to relocate

An expanding Montessori program at Cobb Elementary will be moved to another facility about six blocks away, the Board of Education decided Tuesday.

The program, the only one of its kind within the San Francisco Unified School District, began as a preschool in 2005 but has expanded up to third grade. The district hopes to expand the program to all grades but there is not space to maintain both the Montessori and traditional general education program now operating on the campus.

Parents in the general education program have been lobbying the board with their concerns over the possibility of seeing their students moved off campus.

Moving the Montessori program to another facility will cost the district about $235,000, but they’re hoping to expand its attendance.

The general education students will stay at Cobb, the board decided.
