Midday stock check: Intuitive Surgical passes $273

Sunnyvale robotic surgery systems maker Intuitive Surgical Inc. (ISRG) was up 6.84 percent to more than $273 per share in mid-afternoon trading Eastern Standard Time, the largest share price increase of any of the 50 Bay Area companies tracked by The Examiner. South San Francisco’s Genentech Inc. (DNA) was also up.

At the other end, SanDisk Corp. (SNDK) of Milpitas saw its share price drop more than 12 percent to just over $44 in mid-afternoon trading. The fall comes after the flash memory card maker delivered a better-than-expected third-quarter report, but gave a fourth-quarter forecast that had some analysts concerned about its profit margins, according to CNNMoney.com.

The market was down more than 1 percent overall, with the Dow down 1.75 percent, the Nasdaq down 1.67 percent and the S&P 500 down 1.63 percent.

Intel Corp. (INTC), Sun Microsystems Inc. (JAVA) and Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) were the most heavily traded Bay Area stocks so far Friday, showing more than 49 million, 40 million and 35 million shares traded, respectively.
