Midday shooting has Daly City seeking cover

A brazen midday shooting attack has business owners and community members concerned about safety in their Daly City neighborhood.

The June 13 shooting at Templeton Avenue and Mission Street has prompted a meeting tonight between Daly City police Chief Gary McClane, City Manager Pat Martel and neighborhood residents and businesses to discuss what can be done to staysafe.

At 2 p.m. on the day of the shooting, there were multiple shots fired from two people on Templeton aiming down toward Mission, McClane said. Nobody was hit, but bullets were lodged in nearby businesses and cars. No arrests have been made in the case.

Area violence continued on Sunday, when a man was robbed at gunpoint just after 10 p.m. on the 800 block of Hanover Street, just four blocks up Templeton from Mission, police reported. The suspect jumped into the back of a newer dark-blue Chevrolet Impala or Monte Carlo and was last seen headed westbound on Templeton toward Mission, according to police.

The area has been a congregation point for gang members in the past, but police did not know if the shooting was gang-related, McClane said.

"I just want a safe and secure environment for the businesses, the customers and the residents," said Gary Rudolph, of Rudolph’s Interiors on Mission Street.

Workers in the neighborhood said there has been an increased police presence since the shooting.

McClane said the city wants to update everybody at the meeting about the case and to encourage people to call police when they see a suspicious person or activity. Residents will be advised to watch after one another.

Siu Ling has owned a restaurant near the corner of Mission and Templeton for 14 years, and was inside when she heard the shots fired on June 13. A woman, she said, ducked into her restaurant for cover.

Ling said it was important for everyone to "take care and watch out for each other."

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the North County Dining Center at 31 Bepler St.
