Michela Alioto-Pier enters race for San Francisco mayor

Former District 2 Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier filed to run for mayor with the Department of Elections on Monday morning at 10:19 am. She had long been thought to be planning a mayoral run and now makes it official.

Just a short while ago, Alioto-Pier’s political future was on a different path.  She had attempted to run for state insurance commissioner, but bowed out of that race.

She later sued San Francisco to argue she was not termed out as the District 2 supervisor and was entitled to another four year term.  She lost in a legal battle against City Attorney Dennis Herrera who had made the legal interpretation based on the city charter that she was termed out and couldn’t seek re-election, an interpretation ultimately upheld by the courts.

Now Alioto-Pier is entering the mayor’s race where one of her opponents will be Herrera, who is leading in fundraising.
