Menlo-Atherton ties Carlmont for first place

Senior Erica Hayes poured in 26 points as the Menlo-Atherton girls’ basketball team shattered Carlmont’s perfect Peninsula Athletic League South record with a 65-49 victory Wednesday to create a two-way tie for first place.

Hayes scored off a steal, hit two NBA-size treys and then tossed in four perfect free throws to turn back a third-quarter rally from the Scots (19-5, 8-1 PAL South), who had cut a 16-point deficit to single-digits.

"[Hayes] just came to play," Bears coach Pamela Wimberly said. "This is what I wanted from her all year and she really came through."

Kendra Thomas, who finished with 19 points and seven rebounds, paced an early Bears (17-6, 8-1) charge with 11 first-quarter points — including three 3-pointers — while Victoria Fakulata tossed in eight to key a 15-3 run in the second. Jessica Tuliau helped out with a game-high 11 rebounds and three assists.

Katie Cresci and Emily Richard led a balanced scoring effort from the Scots with 11 apiece, while Kathleen Burrell grabbed nine boards.

"I told the kids today, [the Scots] do not come here and beat us — not in our house," Wimberley said. "But we’ll be happy to share first place with them."

Both teams have one game remaining before the PAL playoffs begin next week.
