Meetings scheduled to hear park proposals

Any time is a good time for parks General Manager Phil Ginsburg to talk about how to raise more money for the Recreation and Park Department. However, if you’re looking for a little more structure, Rec and Park has some meetings coming up to talk about how staff plans to reduce the general fund by $6.8 million by Feb. 22.

Last year, Ginsburg made it his goal to offset a $12.4 million hole in its $33.4 million general fund by leasing concessions in open spaces.

His plan resulted in more than 60 layoffs, dozens of clubhouse closures, and also several more revenue sources.

According to Rec and Park documents, Ginsburg and his staff earned about $10 million more this past fiscal year than in the prior fiscal year by renting out open spaces.

Those efforts have been both praised and criticized by some of the biggest park advocates.

If you want to hear the latest ideas, or have your own ideas, here’s the list of dates. All the meetings run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Jan. 25:  Minnie & Lovie Ward Rec Center (650 Capitol Ave.)
  • Wednesday, Jan. 26: Eugene Friend Rec Center (270 6th St.)
  • Wednesday, Feb. 2: Richmond Rec Center (251 18th Ave)
  • Thursday, Feb. 3: Joe Lee Rec Center (1395 Mendell St.)
