Mayor's Office staffer moving on to Bay Area Council job

Joe Arellano, a former spokesman and communications director for Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office, is leaving to work as the vice president of communications for the Bay Area Council.

He begins his new position May 24.

“I’m pleased that Joe Arellano is joining our organization,” said Jim Wunderman, President and CEO of the Bay Area Council. “He is a seasoned communications operative who brings valuable experience in local and state government and new media.”

Arellano, 28, has served as a spokesman and communications director for Newsom since 2006. Before that, he served in state government as a district representative for then state Sen. Jackie Speier.

In his role, Arellano will shape and direct the organization’s communications strategies and manage external communications, internal communications, media relations, public relations and Web communications, according to the Bay Area Council.
