Mayor, police chief join forces to address embattled crime lab

Mayor Gavin Newsom said he and Police Chief George Gascón are close to releasing a set of recommendations about how to deal with The City's troubled crime lab moving forward.

Today, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi is expected to introduce legislation that would strip The San Francisco Police Department’s authority to run the crime lab.

Newsom said he is coming up with his own framework that will address the underfunded and understaffed crime lab. His said the recommendations will coincide appropriately with his budget that is supposed to be submitted to the Board of Supervisors June 1.

“We are doing it in a judicious manner, not in a politicized manner, I’m not suggesting Ross is,” Newsom said at City Hall. “We are working to make sure we fund those recommendations and in an appropriate manner.”
