Mayor Ed Lee on Tuesday appointed a new trustee to a vacant seat on the City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees.

The appointment of newcomer Alex Randolph fills the seat of 18-year trustee Natalie Berg. It also comes as CCSF faces an accreditation crisis which threatens to close the school.

“It’s exciting to go through Alex’s life, because it mirrors that of many at City College,” Lee said at Randolph’s swearing-in ceremony.

Randolph immigrated to the United States from Germany at age 16, and attended community college in San Diego before graduating from UC Berkeley. He served as legislative aide to former Supervisor Bevan Dufty, and as special assistant to former Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Most recently Randolph worked for the U.S. General Services Administration.

Randolph also has ties to the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, many of whose members were present today, as was his partner, Trevor Nguyen.

The college sweethearts met at UC Berkeley in 2005. “Community colleges run deep in my family,” Randolph said.

Lee’s last appointment to CCSF’s board, Rodrigo Santos, lost his re-election bid despite an over $100,000 election war chest.

Randolph says his priorities differ from Santos’.

He said he would improve access to services for CCSF students who attend the college’s many satellite campuses.

Ultimately, he said, “I’m my own man.”

The CCSF board was removed from power during the accreditation crisis, and is expected to resume in July.
