Mayor close to balancing budget

Mayor Gavin Newsom expects to have close to a balanced budget by Friday, where he said 99 percent of the work will be done.

At SPUR’s business breakfast Tuesday morning, the Mayor took a few minutes to praise city labor unions for stepping up to the plate with concessions that will help close The City’s $483 million budget gap, including 12 furlough days.

With that part out of the way, Newsom is now spending the day having last minute budget discussions, with plans to put The City’s budget to the printer over the weekend, with some tweaks next week. Newsom must submit a balanced budget to the Board of Supervisors by June 1.

“We have a big task ahead, but I’m not going to use the word crisis,” Newsom said. “We have many alternatives to get to a balanced budget.”
