Mayor accuses unions of being two-faced

Mayor Gavin Newsom implied that labor unions were acting two-faced, saying one thing in private and another thing to the press about his proposal to send out 15,000 pink slips on Friday.

Newsom says The City will rehire the majority of those laid off workers under a 37.5-hour workweek, which he calls a “labor-friendly” measure to save $50 million in the general fund at a time when The City is facing a $522 million budget deficit.

Union leaders have accused the mayor of presenting an illegal plan. Newsom shot back saying that if they can prove that his plan to rehire workers is illegal then they are forcing him to a more draconian alternative — massive layoffs.

“We had a good meeting a minute ago, it was very positive,” Newsom said today. “So there is public face and there is a very different private face.”
