Mary Boyle takes fundraising one step at a time

The fundraising and event coordinator for the nonprofit Breast Cancer Network of Strength helped plan the organization’s Walk to Empower on Mother’s Day, a 3-mile walk starting from Justin Herman Plaza.

What’s the history of this event? [It] celebrates [the organization’s] 19th year promoting its mission to ensure ... that no one faces breast cancer alone.

Why do it on Mother’s Day? The walk provides an uplifting opportunity for the entire family to express their love and support for the women in their lives.

How and why did you get involved? I know several survivors myself, including a cousin. When I learned about the organization’s mission, it resonated with me. What’s different is this organization is not raising money for research, but helping people who are facing a diagnosis right now.

Is the organization hoping to expand the event to other cities? During these uncertain economic times, [we’re] focusing on growing the events that are already established before expanding to other markets.

What is the route in San Francisco? The 3-mile course starts at the south end of Justin Herman Plaza, crosses to the east side of The Embarcadero at Market Street and turns north. The route continues along The Embarcadero waterfront to Pier 39.
