Markets, VMware down 

Palo Alto-based VMware Inc. (VMW) fell more than 5.5 percent by the close of the markets Thursday, the sharpest drop seen among local stocks tracked by the Examiner. San Mateo-based Franklin Resources Inc. (BEN) also fell, dropping more than 4.7 percent.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), on the other hand, finished the day up more than 3.4 percent, while Pleasanton-based Safeway Inc. (SWY) rose more than 1.7 percent.

The markets ended down, with the Dow Jones losing more than 120 points, or 0.91 percent, the Nasdaq more than 0.9 percent and the S&P 500 losing more than 1.3 percent.

Local companies in the news included Advanced Micro Devices, which could continue to delay its newest chips, according to Bloomberg News, and Intuit Inc. (INTU), which posted a quarterly loss, according to Reuters.
