Mark your calendars for SotU!

OK? Now you all can start bugging me about something else.  (ap photo)

The White House confirms that President Obama will deliver his State of the Union address at 9 p.m. on January 27, with the budget to follow on February 1. Phew! Because you know, Beltway Confidential's social schedule fills up fast and State of the Union has just kind of been hanging out there. Now we just have to figure out what to wear.

The White House had been stalling a bit on scheduling the annual address. Obama wanted health care reform more or less done by then, which they apparently feel it will be (Scott Brown what?) or maybe -- not.

Linking the speech to a political -- sorry, policy -- objective felt a little....icky, though. Vaguely craven. State of the Union is a pretty big deal, or it should be. Doesn't he have other stuff to talk about? This will be Obama's first SotU, since last year's was technically just an address to the nation.

In any case, we now have what politicians call a date certain to look forward to, and then some hot Peter Orszag budget action!
