Marin nursing homes, preschool under quarantine

A preschool and two senior residential care centers in Marin County are under quarantine for an outbreak of flu-like symptoms.

The Marin Independent Journal reports (http://bit.ly/x2Tf9b) that health officials suspect norovirus may have caused 16 children and adults to become sick at the preschool, which has not been identified.

A total of 73 people also have fallen ill at Aegis Living of San Rafael and Aegis Living in Corte Madera.

Shanna Cronan, a spokeswoman for Marin County Division of Public Health Services, says the agency only learnt of the outbreak at the preschool on Monday, although it began Jan. 13.

Norovirus is a highly contagious gastrointestinal disease that causes flu-like symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramping.

Cronan says the source of the outbreak is under investigation.
