Marin County braces for storms

Marin County officials are preparing response and recovery actions to protect life and property during a series of storms this weekend.

The Marin County Sheriff's Office is advising residents to stay tuned to local radio and television stations for the latest weather information and to check on neighbors to make sure they are keeping abreast of the storms.

Residents living or working along flooding streams and creeks are urged to move to higher ground immediately. Motorists and pedestrians are advised not to cross swiftly flowing water or waters of unknown depth.

Sand bags

Sand bag materials are available at fire stations in San Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley and Corte Madera. They are also available in the baseball field on Elsie Street in Fairfax, the Sausalito Corporation Yard, the Ross Corporation Yard and at Piper Park in Larkspur and at Novato's City Corporation Yard. Sand bags also are available in the Redhill Shopping Center on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in San Anselmo and at local hardware and building supply stores. Some stores may not have sand available and residents may contact Martin Brothers Supply at (415) 388-2025 or Shamrock Materials at (415) 455-1575 for sand and bags. Residents should provide their own shovels.

The first of three storms moved on shore today and two more are expected through Sunday. Rainfall totals vary by region but as many as eight inches of rain is predicted for some areas.

Residents may also visit the Marin County Emergency Services at www.readymarin.org. Tiburon officials have set up a hotline for storm information at (415) 435-7386.
