Marijuana on the mind of public safety officials, Chu

Numerous fires sparked by illegal marijuana grows has given “smoking pot” a whole new meaning for San Francisco officials.

On Wednesday, Police Chief George Gascon, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White and Sunset District Supervisor Carmen Chu will hold a press conference about pot grows around the city and the fire danger posed by the faulty wiring used to sustain them.

Chu has also asked for a hearing at supervisors’ Oct. 5 Public Safety Commission to discuss marijuana cultivation in the avenues.

“The press has been saying that the Sunset is a haven for marijuana growing, and we want to find out if that’s true, or if our officers at the Taraval Station have simply been going above and beyond with enforcement,” said Chu’s aide, Cammy Blackstone.
