March trial set for murder of Millbrae couple

A former Millbrae property manager accused of killing an elderly couple who employed him, pleaded not guilty Thursday morning.

Joseph Cua, 53, who lived in both Burlingame and Hemet in Riverside County, is accused of the brutal bludgeoning of Fernand Wagner, 78, and his wife Suzanne, 68, who were found at their home on 623 Lomita Ave. Cua was arrested in Oxnard a few days after the June 13, 2006 incident thanks in part to an anonymous tip to authorities.

On the day of the incident, Cua left the Bay Area for Hemet, where his wife Joy lived. Joy Cua has testified against him in a preliminary hearing, describing her estranged husband as acting strangely when he arrived. She said he told her that the Wagners were shot and killed, when in actuality the Wagners were found beaten to death.

In the same preliminary hearing, defense attorneys presented evidence that blood from an outside source was discovered at the crime scene.

Cua pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. A trial date was set for March 3. He remains in custody on no bail status.
