Manansala’s jumper keys Lick-Wilmerding

With just more than a minute remaining in the opening round of the North Coast Section Division V boys’ basketball playoffs, St. Bernard’s defense was draped all over Marcus Wells.

Lick-Wilmerding’s star guard was unavailable as the Tigers had the ball, a precarious one-point lead and needed a bucket bad.

So with that in mind, Andrew Manansala (14 points) received the pass, calmly stepped up from the left wing and nailed a jumper to extend the host Tigers’ lead to 54-51 and help them advance to the quarterfinals with a thrilling 59-54 victory Wednesday.

"Someone had to step up," Manansala explained. "They were all over Marcus."

Sixth-seeded Lick-Wilderding (22-7) added a couple free throws and a great defensive stop after that to secure their fifth win in a row and a date Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with third-seeded Berean Christian (23-6) back at Lick. Berean Christian beat Urban 63-43.

Wells finished with 20 points.
