Man who died in fall at 49ers game ID’d

Torrey Kretschman of Roseville was identified Monday as the 31-year-old man who took a 20-foot fall to his death during Sunday’s 49ers football game, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner.

Sometime between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., during the second quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings, Kretschman fell 20 feet from the upper concourse level onto a ramp leading to the lower mezzanine level, between sections 5 and 7, 49ers spokeswoman Lisa Lang said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Kretschman had at least one relative in Northern California — his grandmother, Thurleta Kretschman, of Rocklin.

"I just found out, I can’t believe it," a teary Thurleta Kretschman said Monday afternoon.

Kretschman’s fall has officially been ruled an accident, based on police investigation and several testimonies from witnesses who saw Kretschman’s fatal fall, according to San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens. Kretschman appeared to have arrived at the game with a group of eight to 10 friends, Gittens said. Police are leaving it up to the medical examiner to determine whether he was intoxicated or under the influence of drugs prior to his fall, the police spokesman said.

Kretschman is believed to have climbed a wall in the upper concourse level, which Lang estimated is only approximately six inches wide. Though earlier reports theorized Kretschman was attempting to find a better viewing spot, Lang said the game is not visible from the wall location from which he fell.

There had not been an accidental death at Monster Park, formerly Candlestick Park, since 1985, Lang said.
