Man suspected of setting fire in revenge on mom

A 50-year-old man with an apparent vendetta against his mother was arrested Thursday after trying to set a building on fire where police were investigating his previous arson effort, police said.

At 3:50 p.m. Thursday, family members of the man called police, saying he set a small fire in the home, according to Officer Boaz Mariles. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and police were called to investigate.

About an hour later, while inspectors were talking to the family members, smoke started drifting into the upper floors of the building. Apparently, someone had set another fire and flames began to engulf the building.

Everyone evacuated the house, Mariles said. Police set up a perimeter and saw the man leaving the area. He was detained, but police have yet to release his identity.

Police are not only booking him on arson charges, but also elder abuse, as one of the victims was the man’s 80-year-old mother, Mariles said.
