Man struck and killed by car near San Francisco Zoo

A man was struck and killed by a car near the San Francisco Zoo early this morning, Sgt. Monica Macdonald said.

Just before 7 a.m., officers arrived to the scene of 43rd Avenue and Sloat Boulevard and discovered the victim. Police began CPR before the man was taken to a hospital, where he died, Macdonald said.

He was identified by the Medical Examiner’s Office as 87-year-old Louis Vanvelzen of San Francisco.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with police, Macdonald said.

An investigation is ongoing and it is unknown whether the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the collision or whether the driver did not yield to the pedestrian.
