Man stabbed to death in Mission apartment

A man was found stabbed to death, possibly in his own Mission district apartment, early Sunday morning after a phone call and a trail of blood led officers to him.

Juan Mendez-Hernandez was found stabbed in an apartment at 1160 Florida St. around 3:30 a.m. Sunday after a fight happened outside the complex and a neighbor called police saying there was a trail of blood leading to the place, police said.

The Medical Examiner has not yet determined Mendez-Hernandez’s age nor his area of residence, but police said he may have been inside his own apartment.

Officer Boaz Mariles said preliminary reports did not associate the homicide with gang violence.

The homicide is the 17th this year, and happened nine hours after Stephen Powell, 20, of Berkeley was found shot to death in the unit block of Garlington Court in the Bayview district.

As of April 18, 2009, The City had seen 15 homicides.
