Man stabbed in the nose in SoMa

A man was stabbed in the nose in South of Market on Monday, police said.

The 43-year-old victim was standing near a gas station in the 1200 block of Howard Street at 6:53 p.m. when he was attacked, Sgt. Michael Andraychak said.

The victim was “enjoying an adult beverage” and smoking a cigarette when he was approached by a man in his 50s who called the victim a name and punched him in the face, Andraychak said. The suspect was holding a folding knife in his hand, which punctured the victim’s right nostril.

The suspect then fled the scene. The victim sat down and waited for someone with a phone to walk by to call police, Andraychak said. He was eventually taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

The victim told police he recognized the suspect from the neighborhood, but did not know why he was attacked.
