Man shot Monday in critical but stable condition

A man was shot in the chest near a bar in unincorporated Redwood City late Monday night and is in critical but stable condition at an area hospital, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said today.

The victim told deputies that just before midnight, a man wearing dark clothing and a hood shot him for no apparent reason in a parking lot adjacent to Mazocco's Bar at 2808 Middlefield Road.

The victim was able to make it to the bar's entrance where a security guard called 911. He was transported to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery for his chest wound, deputies said.

The shooter is at large. Witnesses told police they saw a large dark sedan fleeing the area westbound on Pacific Avenue at a high rate of speed, although it is uncertain if it was the suspect's vehicle.

The shooting is under investigation, deputies said.

Anyone with information on the attempted murder is asked to call Detective Frank Taylor at (650) 363-4347.
