Man shot in hip during road rage incident near Hunters Point

A man was shot in the hip during a road rage incident near Hunters Point on Wednesday, police said.

The 21-year-old victim was a passenger in a car traveling on Third Street near Newcomb Avenue about 9 p.m. when a dark-colored Mitsubishi started tailgating the vehicle, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

The Mitsubishi then pulled up on the passenger side of the car at a red light. The driver, described only as a man in his 20s wearing a long-sleeve black hoodie, exchanged words with the victims before punching the passenger in the face, Esparza said.

The victims tried to drive away, but were stopped again by the traffic light at Evans Avenue, police said.

This time, the Mitsubishi driver fired several shots into the car, hitting the passenger in his hip, Esparza said. He was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

No arrest has been made and the incident remains under investigation.
