A man was shot in the chest in an attempted robbery early Wednesday in the Excelsior, police said.

The victim, described by police as a man in his 50s, was waiting at a bus stop at Geneva Avenue and Alemany Boulevard about 4:15 a.m. when two men in their 20s held the man up at gunpoint, police said.

The gun went off and struck the victim in the chest, police said. The suspects fled the scene.

The victim was able to run to a nearby gas station to call police. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for his injury, which is reportedly not life threatening, they said.
