Man shot and killed in fight outside Hayward bar

A man was shot and killed in a fight outside a bar in Hayward early Sunday morning, according to a police spokeswoman.

At about 1:35 a.m., police responded to reports of a large group of people fighting in front of Roberto’s Cocktail Lounge at 26050 Mocine Ave, according to Lt. Chris Orrey. Callers said shots had been fired.

When police arrived, they found a large crowd in the bar’s parking lot, including a man who had been shot and a suspect who was being detained by other people in the crowd, Orrey said.

The victim was taken to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, where he died.

The suspect was arrested for a probation violation and is being held as the investigation continues, Orrey said.

Police believe a fight began inside the bar just before closing time and spilled out into the parking lot.

The suspect then produced a gun and fired it several times, hitting the victim, according to police.

It’s unclear whether the suspect meant to hit the victim, Orrey said.

The victim’s name had not been released as of 6 a.m. Sunday pending notification of his family, police said.

This was Hayward’s sixth homicide of the year.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Hayward police detectives at (510) 293-7197.
