Man says 500 marijuana plants for 'personal use'

A Daly City man who claimed he grew more than 500 marijuana plants for personal use was sentenced to four months in San Mateo County Jail and three years of probation Wednesday for felony possession of marijuana for sale and other charges.

Thang Vinh Hoang, 43, was busted in March of last year after narcotics agents staked out a marijuana grow house at 119 Pinehaven Drive for several months and saw him coming and going.

Along with the plants, 60 ounces of buds were found and also a scale and turkey bags, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. At the home where Hoang lived, nearly $6,500 in cash was found but no marijuana, Wagstaffe said.

Hoang claimed “he and three other family members grew the marijuana for their personal medical needs,” Wagstaffe said.

But a jury in his March trial wasn’t high,  so they found Hoang guilty of the charges.
