Man injured in stabbing over shelter bed in the Bayview

A man was injured in a stabbing that resulted from a fight over a shelter bed in the Bayview on Wednesday, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

The 59-year-old victim was involved in a fight with the suspect inside the shelter in the 1600 block of McKinnon Avenue about 8 p.m.

Security escorted both parties outside the shelter where the fight continued.

The suspect then reportedly stabbed the victim in the stomach before being detained by security, Esparza said.

Police arrived and took the suspect into custody.

He was identified as 57-year-old Gregory Ishengoma of San Francisco, Esparza said. He was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and an outstanding traffic warrant.

The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were not life threatening.

The Providence Baptist Church is nearby and provides mats on the gym floor for people that need them. An employee at the church said a separate foundation runs the night shelter and she did not have any information about what happens at the church at night.
