Man forces his way into Mission district home, steals oxygen tank

A man forced his way into a 66-year-old woman's single room occupancy home in the Mission on Sunday and stole an oxygen tank, police said.

The 49-year-old suspect, who lives in the same residential hotel as the victim and was later arrested, knocked on the woman's door in the 500 block of South Van Ness Avenue about 10 p.m.

The woman, who uses a wheelchair, opened the door and the suspect reportedly reached in and grabbed her hair and then put a lighter to her face to force his way in, police said.

The woman broke free from the suspect and fled the room, Officer Albie Esparza said, and the man entered her unit and reportedly stole an oxygen tank.

The oxygen tank was recovered and the suspect was arrested.

He was identified by police as 49-year-old Dewayne Sheldon of San Francisco, Esparza said. He was booked into County Jail on charges of burglary in the first degree, criminal threats, elder abuse and battery.
