Man fatally struck by Muni Metro was gathering belongings before collision 

The man who was fatally struck by a Muni Metro train on Saturday reportedly fell onto the tracks as he was trying to pick up some belongings near the tracks, police said Tuesday.

The man, who was identified as 55-year-old Michael Mendez, was reportedly sitting near the entry of the tunnel with a friend on the Muni platform in Powell Station about 2:40 p.m. when he went to gather his belongings near the tracks, police said. He then fell into the path of an oncoming train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Muni Metro service was disrupted for several hours while the scene was cleared.
