Man fatally stabbed near Market Street

Two men are suspected of stabbing a 41-year-old San Francisco resident to death early Sunday near the intersection of Market and 12th streets.

Police were called to the intersection, one block from Van Ness Avenue, at 12:01 a.m. to find David Martinez suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The two suspects, described only as having ponytails, fled the scene.

Martinez was the second man to be fatally stabbed in The City in 48 hours. A man who was stabbed and then crashed a car near the intersection of Eighth and Mission streets Friday morning was identified as Samuel Bontrager, 23, of San Francisco. The two killings bring The City’s homicide count to 42 for 2008.
