Man critically injured in stabbing outside Excelsior district bar

A man was critically injured when he was stabbed during a fight outside a bar in the Excelsior neighborhood Tuesday morning, police said.

The 24-year-old victim was reportedly in the bar in the 4700 block of Mission Street with friends about 1:30 a.m. when an altercation started outside. The man told cops he confronted another man who appeared to be trying to assault the victim’s female friend, Officer Albie Esparza said.

The two men began fighting, and the victim felt a sharp pain in his back, Esparza said. He then noticed the suspect had a folding knife in his hand. The victim went back into the bar seeking help, Esparza said, and the suspect fled.

Police only described the suspect as a 20- to 26-year–old man, 5-foot-6 and 170 pounds with black spiky hair.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect possibly flee with another person in a black Honda Civic that drove south on Mission Street. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday.

The victim remains in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital, Esparza said.
