Man arrested in fatal pedestrian collision

A man was arrested and booked on felony charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run after he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his car early Wednesday morning at Van Ness Avenue and Pacific Street, police Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The accident occurred just before 1 a.m. when the 57-year-old victim was reportedly walking across the street outside the crosswalk about mid-block when he was struck by the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the course of investigation, witnesses pointed out the driver to police, who began to walk away from the scene westbound on Pacific Street after the collision, Shyy said.

He was identified by police Wednesday afternoon as Mageb Hussain, 27, of Emeryville.

Speed was definitely a factor in the accident, Shyy said, but it did not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved.

The medical examiner's office has not released the victim's identification pending family notification.
