Man arrested in connection with thefts from church donation box

A 44-year-old man accused of robbing the donation box at an Inner Richmond district church at least a dozen times was arrested last week, police said.

Officers were called to the Star of Sea Church on Geary Boulevard and Eighth Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Thursday after a staff member reportedly saw the man use some kind of tool to fish out cash from a slot in the donation box.

The man was reportedly well-known at the church, police said, as parishioners had witnessed "at least 12" previous thefts. On Thursday, one of the parishioners alerted the staff member as soon as the suspect was seen inside the church.

The suspect left the church but was located a block away, arrested and booked into County Jail on theft charges.
