Man arrested after allegedly evading Muni fare and assaulting a passenger

A man was arrested in the Mission district Friday after reportedly refusing to pay his bus fare and then fighting with someone over a seat, police said Monday.

The suspect, identified by police as 32-year-old San Francisco resident Carlos Burgos, reportedly got on the bus in the 3100 block of Mission Street about 7:06 p.m. and refused to pay, Officer Grace Gatpandan said. Burgos was reported to have been very drunk.

He then confronted a 58-year-old man, demanding the man's seat. The man refused and the two started fighting, police said.

Burgos is alleged to have hit the victim in the face with a bottle. The man was treated at a hospital, but the injury was not life-threatening.

Burgos was booked into County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, public drunkenness, fare evasion, blocking another person in a public transit system and two outstanding warrants, one for a DUI and the other for theft, Gatpandan said.
