  • Lucky stores in the Bay Area warned users of their self-checkout lanes about a major security in October and November.

These grocery shoppers certainly weren’t lucky — and now they are being advised to close their bank accounts.

At least 80 employees and customers at nearly two dozen Lucky grocery stores in the Bay Area, including a store in San Francisco’s Sunset district, had their checking accounts compromised after crooks tampered with credit and debit card readers in self-checkout lanes.

The chain announced the breach at 23 Bay Area stores on Monday. At least 80 employees and customers had their accounts compromised, with many reporting that money was stolen, but there were indications that number could be even higher.

Lucky said anyone using self-checkout terminals at affected stores in the past few months should close their accounts immediately.

Police in Petaluma said at least 57 people reported money being stolen from their bank accounts after using a self-checkout line.

Alicia Rockwell from Lucky Supermarkets said she did not know whether the 57 in the Petaluma area were among the 80 customers and employees who had contacted the chain. She also did not know how much money was stolen, but said many of the thefts occurred last weekend.
