Lowell, ISA, Washington players earn AAA honors

Lowell guard Travis Hom and International Studies Academy forward Dominic Stewart were named the Academic Athletic Association boys’ basketball Co-Players of the Year on Tuesday, while Washington guard Stephanie Truong took the girls’ top honor.

Hom, a junior, averaged 15 points and 6.5 assists per game for a Cardinals team that went 28-5 and won a second consecutive San Francisco Section championship. But according to Lowell coach Robert Ray, his signature performance may have come in a 74-72 loss to ISA on Jan. 10. Hom scored 22 of his 26 points in the second half and overtime and eventually had to be helped off the floor with extreme leg cramps.

"He was willing to do whatever it took for us that day," Ray said. "He pretty much took over, and from that point he really developed into a great leader."

Stewart made the most of his one season at ISA, averaging close to 23 points and seven rebounds a game. The senior scored 50 points in a 94-86 win over Mission Jan. 19. He and twin brother Marseilles Stewart dominated teams with their inside-out play and competed as fiercely as anyone in the league. Both will play at West Valley College next year.

"Team, family, Cobras was their thing all year," ISA coach Rudy Russell said. "They never acted like they were big-time or better than any of the other players. They cared about everyone."

Truong ran Washington’s offense as a point forward and was just as comfortable hitting 3-pointers as she was penetrating and setting up a teammate. She averaged 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for a Washington team that was the runner-up in the San Francisco Section final and advanced to NorCals.

"I just love basketball," Truong said. "There’s so much freedom in it, and it’s so fun being out there with my teammates."
